The Healthcare Industry
There are two principal ways in which IT can contribute to the health care industry: by reducing costs and by increasing the quality of care. Broadly speaking, IT can expedite the transfer of information among the widely dispersed players in the health care industry, either making communications less costly or creating avenues for value-adding communication where they did not exist previously. Health care
professional have four key requirements for any integrated information
system: speed, ease of use, compatibility with older hardware and
organization and communication of information. They want to be able
to access information such as laboratory results, patient records
or bills and claims quickly, so that they can focus on the patient
or the immediate task at hand. The enormous expense of retraining
staff to use new systems has made healthcare professionals wary
of any technological changes, even those that promise huge improvement.
Backwards hardware compatibility is essential, especially with HIPAA,
to reduce hardware costs and retraining costs. For
